The lynz (pronounced "lines") is a dynamic googologism that grows over time.^[1]

Definition[]

There are two definitions. The first lynz is defined as follows:

It is 100 on February 26th, 1998.
For all following days, the value of the previous day is doubled.
It is rounded to 10⁶³ on September 17th, 1998.
For all following days, the value of the previous day is squared.

The second lynz is defined as follows:

It is 100 on July 13th, 1998.
For all following days, the value of the previous day is doubled.

The term "the lynz" abbreviated K (kappa), refers to the sum of the two.

where \(d\) is the number of days since February 26th, 1998.

Function[]

The lynz, and its larger derivative Clarkkkkson, both change over time. Thus, they can be considered functions of time instead of true numbers.

This googolism changes over time, so it can be thought of as a function of the number of days since February 26th, 1998. Such a function can be defined using the previous formal definition.

Current value[]

The current value (2025-12-12 for UTC) (refresh) is approximately 10^{10²⁹⁹⁶}, because it is 9948 days from 1998-09-17 (\(d = 10151\)). More precise approximation is 10^{10^{2996.4457374147}}.

History[]

The number originated when (possibly fictional) chemistry student Adam Clarkson was told to write "I must always tuck my shirt in whilst participating in a Chemistry Lesson" one hundred times on a chalkboard by his teacher. The teacher, Jimmé, added that the number of lines would double for every day they were not done. On September 17th, the teacher said "If they're not on my desk by tomorrow, they'll square!", causing the number to square every day after that.

The second lynz originated from Clarkson being told to write "I must do my lines".
